Muerte y Vida

“This sculpture symbolizes maternal sacrifice. My mother, Norma, would often feed us, knowing that there would not be enough for her. She didn't allow us to see the hardship we were experiencing, adding a bit of humor to our situation. Filet mignon!! she joked when we ate rice. Crab legs with pasta!! When it was rice, again… Having witnessed how my grandmother prolonged her last moments to be able to see her daughter one last time, when she was dying from cancer, made me understand then how strong mothers are and the sacrifices they are willing to make for their children.”
This piece is one of 21 other artworks in an exhibit called "A layered presence", "Una presencia estratificada" at the Nelson Atkins.
